Rental For Cable & Antenna Measurement

As more base stations are commissioned, to support the growing demand for mobile voice and data communications, fast and efficient installation and maintenance needs to be performed to make sure that they are operating at optimum performance to ensure the quality of voice and data being carried, and to minimize the number of dropped calls and links. The cable and antennas system forms an essential part of the base station functionality and any degradation or failure here will ultimately affect the carriers’ ability to generate revenue.

As this equipment is, by its very nature, exposed to the elements faults will occur and need to be found and resolved quickly. These faults include damage from lightening strikes, loose or corroded connectors, pinched coax or degraded cable all of which can lead to reduced power, reduced signal to noise or increased signal reflections and therefore problems with the transmitted and received signals.  

Frequency Domain Reflectometry technology is mostly used to characterise these systems, as small changes and degradations can be identified at the frequency of operation. Also many of the components within the system are frequency selective, so testing at the operating frequencies means that testing can be carried out through these devices. 

The key measurements in the field include Return Loss, VSWR and Insertion Loss: Return Loss and VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) are both measurements that indicate how well matched a system is. A poorly matched system results in unnecessary reflections and thus a reduction in quality and power through to the radiated signal. Insertion Loss is the loss introduced into the transmission system by the inclusion of a cable system. This can be measured by measuring the return loss of the cable section with the ends of the cable shorted out. 

If a fault in the system is identified, then a time domain measurement is needed to calculate where the fault is located. This Distance To Fault (DTF) measurement is still calculated using a swept frequency signal but converted into the time domain using an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform and the travel time to the fault can be measured. If the propogation velocity of the dielectric, for the range of frequencies, is known then the distance to the fault can be calculated.
